This route, which lasts a total of 5 hours by car (8 if you keep Trento in mind as a starting and return point), runs through many of the most beautiful panoramas within the context of the Dolomites. The entire itinerary is designed to be reached comfortably by car even for those who are not familiar with trekking.
1 day: Cavalese and Lake Carezza
We then leave via Trento for Cavalese to stop at Lake Carezza where we will stop for the night (coming from Milan). My advice is to stay at Agriturismo Karerhof (4 stars), Grand Hotel Carezza (€ 85 night) or Albergo Meierei (03) (where I stayed, a magnificent 2-star low-cost hotel with super views).
Here are the photos of these solutions, numbered by order.
This photo of Lake Carezza dates back to 2015, when the trees around the lake had not yet been cut down by the fury of the wind. The tour of the lake is very fast and pleasant to do and there is no difficulty (it can also be traveled with a stroller in tow).
Day 2: From Vigo di Fassa to the Friedrich August Refuge
The itinerary from the lake to the refuge is breathtaking, surrounded by rock walls that make you feel a “dot in the universe” (cit). The Friedrich August Refuge is located on the southern side of the Sassolungo group. After leaving the car in the parking lot below, you can easily reach it after 30-40 minutes of walking (also practicable in this case with a stroller, even if the road is steeper).
Here you will stop for lunch (or rather even for breakfast! Famous for the krapfen oven ) because the place, the view and everything will be your side dish.
At this point you can decide whether to take the day to explore the area or make a single trip up to the Braies Lake . Obviously there are places that deserve to be visited even more than a (wonderful) lake always taken by storm. So if you are halfway through the day it will not be worth running down the street, arriving in the evening with too many people and not enjoying the lake. Better to wait the next day and wake up as soon as you can (hurry up!), Or at least before the tourists.
What to visit nearby?
- Selva val Gardena
- Dantercepies gondola lift
- Telecabin Forcella del Sassolungo
- Visit Gostner Schwaige (restaurant with artistic dishes)
- Alpe di Siusi
- Church of Santa Caterina
Where to stay overnight
Day 3: Braies Lake
We talked about Lake Braies in this article, telling about the wonders and pitfalls (too many people).
Take at least half a day to better visit the lake. We then head towards Lake Misurina , passing through the lake of Dobbiaco.
I stayed at the Misurina Lake in one of the hotels available nearby. In all honesty it is not something I would do again, in May the lake was deserted and in the surroundings there were only large groups of visitors. Better to choose a more secluded solution.
A quick visit to Lake Dobbiaco follows , with its swans almost always present.
Here is a series of proposals for overnight stays :
- Naturhotel Leitlhof (4 stars)
- Hotel Rosengarten (3 places)
- Hotel Huber (2 stars)
4th day: Misurina and Monte Piana
This last day we dedicate it to visiting lakes and Monte Piana , a war territory during the First World War with visible trenches and war finds.
What see:
- Misurina lake
- Antorno lake
- Monte Piana
