10 Restaurants to try in Milan

by Matilde

Here in Milan there is a lot of places to visit. Here is a list of some places you absolutely must try!

1. Simple and sweet

There is no better way to start the definitive gourmet tour than with the perfect breakfast … or brunch. The basic requirements: an espresso or a cappuccino and a brioche, as the Milanese call it (elsewhere you can ask for a “croissant”). From there, feel free to venture into sweet or savory. There are countless points to choose from, so you can keep it simple and traditional, or go all out for a table full of goods.

Where to go:

Marchesi pastry shops  – Via Santa Maria alla Porta, 11a (the original founded in 1824) OR Via Monte Napoleone, 9

Pavé  – Via Felice Casati, 27

2. High class at high altitude

Take the elevator up to the roof at Ceresio 7, the restaurant and bar owned by the powerhouse couple from Dsquared. Just as one would expect from a restaurant owned by stylists, this place is elegant and refined. Think traditional pasta, risotto, fish and meat dishes with a modern twist. Book for a romantic dinner or to save money enjoy a cocktail in one of the most fashionable places in the city (10-15 euros including some snacks =

Ceresio 7  – Via Ceresio, 7

3. Tradition calls

There is a time and a place for trendy places, but sometimes you just need good traditional cuisine. Enter an   old-school trattoria and order a  Cotoletta  or  Costoletta alla Milanese  with your best Italian accent (make friends if you spot it or not) and prepare for a 1 cm thick veal cutlet fried in butter.

Where to go:

Trattoria Madonnina  – Via Gentilino, 6

The Other Island  – Via Edoardo Porro 8

From Martino  – Via Carlo Farini 8

At Garghet Milan   – Via Selvanesco 36

4. Pizza time

There are many things to eat in Milan, but if you miss the good old traditional pizza .. here are some addresses

Where to go:

Gino Sorbillo  , Mother Yeast at the Duomo – Largo Corsia dei Servi, 11

Maruzzella  – Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan, 3

Little Ischia  – Via Giovanni Battista Morgagni, 7

5.  Luxury dinners

I bet you had no idea that Milan was a great place for caviar. Near Brescia, some of the best caviar in the world are produced in the largest sturgeon farm in the whole of Europe. So you live like a king and savor one of the few restaurants in which it is served,  Trussardi alla Scala  .

Trussardi alla Scala  – Piazza della Scala, 5

6. Unique places

If you are a fan of the director and his eccentric films, you will love  Bar Luce  in Milan for a coffee, a cake or an aperitif, conveniently located in  the Prada Foundation  . It is one of the most unique places in the city and EVERYTHING is in the unmistakable style of Anderson – the man himself designed it. Take a tour of the  Prada Foundation  , which is definitely worth a visit.

Bar Luce  – Largo Isarco, 2

7. All crazy about ice cream

Another of those absolute must-haves. The ice cream is only better here and even more on a hot day. Take a cup, a cone or a brioche (highly recommended) and take a walk along the  canals  (canals). My favorite is the pistachio and gianduia of the  Gelateria della Musica  . If you prefer a photo instead of a tourist, do not miss out on Italian chocolates.

Where to go:

Gelateria della Musica  – Via Giovanni Enrico Pestalozzi, 4

Ciacco  – Via Spadari, 13 (With options for vegans)

The Massimo del Gelato  – Via Lodovico Castelvetro, 18

8. Traditional flavors

If you are in Milan, you must try the typical dish –  Risotto alla Milanese with Ossobuco  . One of my absolute favorites and the Milanese dish par excellence. The rich and creamy saffron-flavored risotto is combined with the bone-cut veal shank.

Where to go:

Trattoria Masuelli San Marco  – Viale Umbria, 80

Ratanà  – Via Gaetano de Castillia, 28

Antica Trattoria della Pesa  – Viale Pasubio, 10

9. The secret garden

This place is a farmers market, a wine cellar, a hostel, a community garden, an event venue and an extraordinary restaurant and bar. Food and drink locally produced in one of Milan’s most relaxed atmospheres is guaranteed, and if you’re lucky enough to visit in good weather, I suggest you take a table outside in the garden with friends.

Cascina Cuccagna (One Place in Milan)  – Via Privata Cuccagna, 2

10. The aperitif

The aperitif, or happy hour, is the specialty of Milan. The city is crammed with places to get a cocktail and a bite to eat to hold you back before dinner. Most of the time, pay for a drink and follow the food for free, sometimes in the form of a buffet. Be sure to try different neighborhoods, as everyone offers a different kind of atmosphere.
